Spain Election Brings Political System in Line With EU Standards - Podemos

The Spanish general election brought the country's political system into accordance with "political reality in European states," where bilateral partisanship ceased to exist, Juan Lopez de Uralde, who led the Podemos party's election list for the northern Spanish province of Alava, told Sputnik.

MADRID (Sputnik) — Spain’s ruling People’s Party (PP) won the Sunday general elections, getting 123 seats in the country’s parliament, 63 less than it obtained in the 2011 vote. PP's traditional rival Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) secured 90 seats. Left-wing Podemos came third, gaining 69 seats. At least 176 seats are needed to have parliamentary majority.

"In many European countries the presence of political forces in Parliament is diverse because it represents the whole society, and therefore the formation of a government is always the result of dialogue and pacts," Lopez de Uralde said, stressing that the exclusive rule of PP and PSOE became a history.

He added that in order to set up a cabinet, the political forces who entered the government "will have to discuss and agree" and the new Spanish political system "is not ungovernable."

Podemos party, founded in 2014, campaigned on a platform that calls for renegotiating unpopular austerity measures that the European Union pressured the Spanish government to adopt in 2012.
