UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) — New measures to address a political transition in Syria will be announced in the coming weeks following major discussions at the UN General Assembly (UNGA), EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Frederica Mogherini said on Tuesday.
"Around this concept of starting a political process [in Syria]…I see that there might be a political space for new initiatives in the coming weeks," Mogherini said at a press conference on the sidelines of the UNGA.
Mogherini went on that during recent meetings among UN leaders, there have been discussions that "can lead to common ground on…a change in the democratic life of Syria."
During previous UN-sponsored Syria peace talks, a significant disagreement persisted among members of the UN Security Council over the future composition of the Syrian government.
In August, the Security Council unanimously agreed to renew a dialogue on Syria including talks on a political transition in the country.
EU, Russia Discuss Plan to Combat Human Trafficking
Mogherini also mentioned the talks between the representatives from Russia and the European Union on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly on a new UN Security Council plan to combat and interdict criminal organizations involved in human trafficking.
"It is an operation that is targeting the smugglers and the traffickers of women, the criminal networks," Mogherini told the press of a new UN anti-trafficking initiative called Sophia.
Mogherini explained that she had the chance to discuss the new plan on Tuesday "with some of our colleagues, in particular with Foreign Minister [Sergei] Lavrov."
"Now, we will move to phase two, which is in the high seas, in full respect of international law, the possibility to see the vessels and bring the suspect smugglers to justice," she said.
Mogherini emphasized the significance of her dialogue with Lavrov on the subject of combating the criminal networks and the financial flows that enable those networks to operate.
