At least seven people were killed and two injured in a major car accident in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Chechnya, a local emergencies source told RIA Novosti on Monday.

GROZNY (Sputnik) — At least seven people were killed and two injured in a major car accident in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Chechnya, a local emergencies source told RIA Novosti on Monday.

"Four cars collided with each other. Seven people died on the spot of the accident, two were hospitalized. Of these, one is in grave condition."

The fatal crash occurred on a federal highway, near the city of Gudermes, located some 22 miles east of Grozny, the republic's capital.

The causes of the road accident are yet to be ascertained. An investigative team is currently working at the site, according to the source.
