MOSCOW (Sputnik) — At the moment, Afghanistan alongside Iran, India, Pakistan and Mongolia, has observer status in the SCO.

"We welcome the extension of the SCO. I am sure it is up to the SCO whether to give membership to Pakistan, India or Iran."

The top Afghan diplomat added Kabul still had to meet some criteria for SCO membership before their application could be considered.

The SCO is a political, economic and military alliance, established in 2001, comprising Russia, China and Kazakhstan, as well as Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

A high-level security conference of member states, observers and dialogue partners of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) takes place in Moscow on Thursday.
