Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has signed amended legislation stipulating the special status of the Donbas people's republics.

KIEV (Sputnik) — Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has signed amended legislation outlining the special status of self-proclaimed regions in eastern Ukraine, according to a statement on his official website posted on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, the Ukrainian parliament decided to postpone giving special status to Luhansk and Donetsk republics until elections were held in Donbas under Ukrainian law, and declared parts of the regions "occupied" territories.

The law, which stipulates that self-proclaimed people's republics of Donetsk and Luhansk will be able to obtain special administrative status only after holding elections in line with Ukrainian laws and under the supervision of international monitors, was approved by the Ukrainian parliament on Tuesday.

Granting special status to Ukraine's southeast regions of Donetsk and Luhansk was one of the key points of the deal signed by both Kiev authorities and independence supporters in Minsk in February.
