MOSCOW, October 17 (RIA Novosti) – A Beijing court has sentenced a former senior Railways Ministry official, Zhang Shuguang, to death with a two-year reprieve for accepting bribes, Xinhua news agency reported Friday.
According to the materials of the case, Zhang received bribes totaling about $7.68 million while on duty from 14 companies from 2000 to 2011. For the sums received he helped these companies to enter into contracts on the sale of railway cars and parts, as well as to win tenders for projects.
The court also deprived the Railways Ministry deputy chief engineer of his political rights for life and confiscated his property.
Zhang is the second high-ranking official from the Railways Ministry who has been sentenced to death. Earlier, former Railways Minister Liu Zhijun was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve for bribery and abuse of power.
