MOSCOW, June 16 (RIA Novosti) - China condemned the Saturday attack on the Russian Embassy in Kiev, the country's Foreign Minister Hua Chunying said in a statement Monday.

"The Chinese side condemns the attack on the diplomatic mission in Russia. According to the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and other international laws, the security of diplomatic structures and its staff must be diligently guaranteed," Chunying stated.

Several hundred protesters attacked Russian diplomatic mission in the Ukrainian capital tearing the Russian flag from the embassy building, pulling cobblestones from the street to hurl at the mission, and overturning several diplomatic cars. Rocks and smoke grenades pelted the facade.

Balaclava-wearing protesters threw a Molotov cocktail inside the compound, starting a minor fire which was swiftly extinguished. The police did nothing to stop the crowd, according to local media outlets.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Deshchytsia sided with the demonstrators, saying he supported the protest and chanting abusive slogans. He later claimed this was a mere stunt he used to distract the crowd from laying siege to the embassy.

Three suspects have been detained on alleged hooliganism charges.
