MOSCOW, April 25 (RIA Novosti) – The Ukrainian defense industry has practically lost all government support because of the political crisis in the country, and a break in ties with Russia could become critical for the sector, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Friday.
“In the terms of the severe government crisis, Ukraine’s military industry has been practically left without state support. Two-thirds of its partner companies are located in our country, in Russia. And we understand extremely well that a possible disruption in corporate ties may become critical for Ukraine’s defense industry for the people working in this area as well as their families,” Putin said.
“Maintaining the scientific and construction potentials made jointly together corresponds to the interests of both Russia and Ukraine,” he added.
Ukraine plunged into a political and economic crisis since a military coup in late February ousted President Viktor Yanukovych. Kiev banned all exports of arms and military equipment to Russia following the Crimean referendum, which lead to the republic’s reunification with Russia.
The head of Ukraine’s Defense Industry, Yuriy Tereshchenko, said that Russia would not be able to produce certain types of weaponry, including military helicopters, without the components manufactured in Ukraine. Moscow has denied the claims, saying that Kiev’s supplies are not crucial for the Russian defense industry.
