MOSCOW, December 5 (RIA Novosti) – Poland illuminated its tallest building in the colors of the Ukrainian flag on Wednesday night to show solidarity with its eastern neighbor, whose capital has been overwhelmed by protests over the scuttling of major agreements with the European Union.

Warsaw’s Palace of Culture and Science, a 42-story gift from the Soviet Union initially named after Josef Stalin, was illuminated in yellow and blue light from around dusk until midnight as “sign of solidarity with our neighbors,” Mayor Hanna Gronkiewicz wrote on Twitter.

The Ukrainian government late last month backed out of long-discussed plans to sign association and free-trade agreements that would have brought the country closer to the European Union, opting instead to strengthen economic relations with Russia.

Hundreds of thousands of people have since taken to the streets of Kiev in the largest protests since the country’s 2004-2005 Orange Revolution.
