Commercial exploration for non-ferrous metal ores, mercury, natural gas and oil has been conducted on the islands and along the coastal area. Three of the Kuril Islands – Iturup, Kunashir and Shikotan – were occupied by Soviet forces at the end of World War II, and are still claimed by Japan.
