MOSCOW, April 3 (RIA Novosti) - One person died as a car collided with a train in the Leningrad Region surrounding the Russian northwestern city of St. Petersburg, the Emergencies Ministry reported.

“A freight train collided with a sport utility vehicle at a passive railroad crossing near Naziya station in the Kirovsk District of the Leningrad Region at 19:05 Moscow Time [15:05 GMT],” the ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.

“The SUV driver died,” it said. The rail tracks were not damaged.

An investigation is underway.

About 30,000 people die in traffic accidents in Russia annually. The accidents are attributed to a poor condition of roads and traffic violations, including drunk driving, running red lights and crossing into the oncoming lane.
