NALCHIK, November 18 (RIA Novosti) - Law enforcement officers in the Russian North Caucasus republic of Kabardino-Balkaria have killed two suspected militants, a spokesman for the regional Interior Ministry department said.

“On Saturday evening, law enforcement officers tried to stop two suspicious people in the northern village of Baksanyonok,” the spokesman said. “The men put up armed resistance and were killed by return fire.”

No law enforcement officers or civilians have been killed or injured. An investigation is underway.

Over a decade after the end of a war against Islamist separatists in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Chechnya, Russian security forces continue to fight militants across the volatile region.

The Islamist insurgency, once confined largely to Chechnya, has spread in recent years across the North Caucasus. Attacks on security forces, police and civilians are also reported regularly in the neighboring republics of Ingushetia, Dagestan and Kabardino-Balkaria.
