Unknown assailants have killed a 48-year-old religious figure in the Russian North Caucasus republic of Ingushetia.
“Yunus Akhilgov, born in 1964, was killed in the Troitskaya village,” an investigator told RIA Novosti by phone. A law enforcement source told RIA Novosti that Akhilgov was a Muslim religious figure.
An investigation is underway.
An Islamist insurgency once confined largely to Chechnya has spread in recent years across the North Caucasus, with attacks reported regularly in the neighboring republics of Dagestan, Ingushetia, and Kabardino-Balkaria.
