Seven servicemen were injured in clashes between Sunni Muslim and Alawite neighbourhoods in Lebanon’s second largest city of Tripoli, the country’s New TV channel reported on Tuesday.

Violent clashes erupted on Monday night between the neighborhoods of Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Moshen. Gunfire that left one person dead and at least 15 injured briefly ended when the Lebanese army intervened on Tuesday morning, but resumed several hours later.

Tensions between Lebanon’s Sunni Muslims and Alawites have been aggravated by the civil conflict in neighboring Syria, where the predominantly Sunni opposition clashed with supporters of Alawite President Bashar al-Assad.

Lebanon’s north, with Tripoli as its administrative center, remains the main stronghold for Lebanese supporters of the Syrian opposition and a supplier of weapons and fighters for the Syrian opposition.
