At least 12 people were killed as an 11-story building collapsed in Egypt’s second-largest city of Alexandria on Saturday, Al-Arabiya TV channel reported.
According to Egyptian media, the collapse of the building, which was constructed not long ago in the western part of the city, caused three nearby houses to tumble, as well.
Witnesses say dozens can be buried under the rubble as one of the crashed buildings housed several families and a large bakery.
At least three people have been pulled out from the rubble and taken to hospital but, according to officials, the city’s narrow streets and the scale of the disaster hamper the rescue operation.
Police are searching for the owner of the building, the upper stories of which were most likely constructed without a permission of the city’s authorities.
