Kazakhstan's President Nursultan Nazarbayev on Tuesday slammed as “rough and brazen” officials who favor foreign SUVs and urged them to turn to domestically manufactured cars.

“How many times should we talk about this?" Nazarbayev said.

"In the West, they buy small family cars because their gasoline consumption is low and these cars do not create traffic problems. And our [officials] – they’ve gotten pretty brazen. These former have-nots believe they ought to have tanks,” Navrabayev said.

The president said he had urged the government to buy domestic vehicles but most officials were reluctant to stop buying foreign cars.

“I issued instructions for the governmnent to purchase home-made vehicles from national companies, whatever vehicles: trucks, medical, police, cars for officials," he said.

"However, none but the Interior Ministry and the Emergencies Ministry concluded contracts with national producers. The majority continued buying cars from abroad.”
