The leaders of Italy, France, Germany and Spain do not plan to take any specific decisions at their meeting in Rome on Friday to discuss measures for overcoming the economic crisis, German government spokesman Georg Streiter said.

“It's just going to be a visit,” the DPA agency quoted Streiter as saying. The meeting is to exchange opinions and not to conduct formal consultations, he said.

The main topic of the mini summit is Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti’s proposal at the recent G20 Summit in Mexico to use part of the so-called EU rescue fund to buy state debt of Italy and Spain.

The idea was supported by French President Francois Hollande but German Chancellor Angela Merkel has not approved it yet.

The Italian media have characterized Friday's meeting as fundamental for understanding what the EU's future policy will be.
