The earthquake occurred at 14:27 local time (05:27 GMT), about 486 kilometers (302 miles) south-southwest of Tokyo, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said. It was about 370 km deep, according to JMA.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injury and no tsunami alert was issued.

A powerful earthquake and tsunami hit Japan on March 11. The natural disaster in northeast Japan left more than 25,000 people dead or missing. Thousands more were forced to evacuate their homes in the ensuing nuclear disaster.
