At least 130 people have been killed in floods in the Philippines after a tropical storm hit the region, emergency officials say.
Most of the victims drowned on southern Mindanao Island, Benito Ramos, head of the national disaster rescue agency, said on Saturday.
“Massive flooding had been reported over the region, especially in Iligan City and Cagayan de Oro City,” the BBC quoted Ramos as saying.
While tens of thousands of people managed to escape to high ground, the death toll is expected to rise.
Ramos said 25 millimeters of rain had fallen over the past 24 hours, causing rivers to overflow.
The eye of Tropical Storm Washi passed close to Dipolog city near Iligan early on Saturday, weather forecasters said.
