Russian police officers working in positions where they may be exposed to the temptations of bribery and corruption will have to take lie-detector tests, Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliyev said on Friday.
“This mainly concerns officers appointed to posts where there is a risk of corruption,” Nurgaliyev said at a meeting with police officials in the central Russian city of Voronezh.
“They will face lie detector tests,” he added. “This is normal practice.”
President Dmitry Medvedev has launched a large-scale reform of the police, including cutting the number of policemen and increasing salaries in response to criticism of the force.
Nurgaliyev also said that officers would face drugs and alcohol tests.
