Armenia wants the international community to give a legal, political and moral assessment of the 1915 Armenian genocide," Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan said on Sunday.

Armenia wants the international community to give a legal, political and moral assessment of the 1915 Armenian genocide," Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan said on Sunday.

Armenians all around the world are marking the 96th anniversary of the Armenian genocide in the Ottoman Empire when 1.5 million Armenians are believed to have been massacred at the time.

"Today is the 96th anniversary of the Armenian genocide. The aim of the horrible crime by Turkey during World War I was complete destruction of Armenians and its consequence was the deprivation of the Armenian people of their homeland, complete destruction of the physical, historical, spiritual and cultural presence of Armenians in their motherland," Sargsyan said.

The Turkish genocide in Armenia was first recognized by Uruguay in 1965 and many countries, including Russia, have since followed suit. Although it has been recognized by 42 U.S. states, the U.S. government has yet to pass a bill on the issue.
