In 2010, police reform became one of the top priorities for Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. On August 6, 2010 Medvedev proposed to return to the militia the name it was previously known as - “the police.”

In 2010, police reform became one of the top priorities for Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.  On August 6, 2010 Medvedev proposed to return to the militia the name it was previously known as - “the police.” He said the country needs professionals who work effectively, honestly and cohesively. Medvedev explained that law enforcers in Russia began to be called the militia during the October Revolution. In January 2011, the Russian lower house of parliament, the State Duma passed the law “On police” which was later signed by Medvedev.
