Council of Europe Human Rights Commissioner Thomas Hammarberg urged Armenia on Friday to free jailed opposition figures.

The Armenian opposition, led by former president Levon Ter-Petrosyan, held rallies in February 2008 protesting the results of presidential elections that saw then premier Serzh Sargsyan win in the first round.

The protests ended in riots and clashes with police on March 1-2, 2008. Ten people were killed, over 200 injured and more than 100 arrested. Some 10 people the opposition calls "political prisoners" are still in jail.

Hammarberg told journalists in Yerevan that, despite an amnesty, a number of people are still being held. He said he had tried to negotiate their release with the South Caucasus country's authorities.
