Moscow's Domodedovo airport ground to a halt on Sunday when a power cut delayed flights leaving hundreds of passengers stranded.

Moscow's Domodedovo airport ground to a halt on Sunday when a power cut delayed flights leaving hundreds of passengers stranded.

A spokeswoman for the airport said two power wires were broken at electric substations in the Moscow Region following a freezing rain that hit the Russian capital on Saturday.

"The work of the airport has been temporarily suspended," Yelena Galanova said adding that the repair works were ongoing.

More than 10 flights were sent from the Domodedovo airport to Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport, which is currently working in a normal regime, Ekho Moskvy radio station reported.

The freezing rain turned roads into icy sheets in Moscow and prompted major railway traffic disturbances in the Moscow Region.

Some 100,000 people were left without electricity in the Moscow Region, a spokesman for the Moscow electric power grid company said.

Russia's chief sanitary doctor Gennady Onishchenko recommended Muscovites to stay at home to avoid being injured on icy roads.
