At least eight people were injured during an armed scuffle between residents of the city of Zelenokumsk in Russia's southern Stavropol region over the honor of a young girl, the region's police press service said on Saturday.
According to police reports, some 100 people were involved in the incident late Friday night that involved handguns after a group of young men attempted to "protect the honor" of a young girl, whom a group of Chechens had allegedly attempted to forcibly seat in their car.
"A group of young adults from Zelenokumsk decided to protect the honor of a minor, who had complained that a group of local Chechens had tried to force her into their car. The 'protectors' were shot at with handguns from the inside of the car," the report read.
Stavropol region is located in Russia's volatile North Caucus region, which includes the republics of Chechnya, Dagestan, Ingushetia and North Ossetia, where terrorist attacks and police shootouts are common.
One of the injured has been hospitalized and is undergoing surgery due to gunshot wounds to the abdomen, the remaining seven have been diagnosed with various non-fatal injuries.
Police were able to disperse the crowd of 100 people and prevented any further escalations.
