The Belarusian foreign minister expressed hope on Monday that the European Union would drop its "groundless and unjustified" sanctions against Minsk next month.

Last November, EU foreign ministers resolved to extend the 2006 travel ban on a number of Belarusian officials, including President Alexander Lukashenko, until October 2010.

"I do not expect that the European Union will freeze relations with Belarus, as both Belarus and the European Union are interested in improving relations," Sergei Martynov told a news conference in Minsk.

"We are convinced that such measures [as sanctions] yield no [positive] results," he added.
