Moscow supports the creation of a national unity parliament in Afghanistan, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Monday.

Moscow supports the creation of a national unity parliament in Afghanistan, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Monday.

Elections were held in Afghanistan on Saturday to choose 249 lawmakers from more than 2,500 candidates. The final results of the polls are expected on or around October 31.

"Russia supports the forming of a new parliament of national unity, which, in cooperation with other branches of power, [with] the Afghan president, would contribute to turning Afghanistan into a peaceful, independent and prosperous state," a statement read.

"Russia is ready to continue its support for the Afghan government and the international community's efforts toward the democratic development, stabilization, social and economic revival of Afghanistan," the ministry said.

Taliban fighters launched dozens of rocket attacks on polling stations across the country to prevent people from voting in the elections. The attacks left 15 civilians dead and 42 injured.

The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said four foreign servicemen were killed and 38 injured on election day, while the Afghan army's casualties included eight dead and 22 injured. Six police officers were also killed.
