At least 80 people have been killed and some 2,000 people are missing after heavy rains triggered landslides in northwest China's Gansu Province, official news agency Xinhua reported on Sunday.

Torrential rains hit the Gannan Tibetan autonomous region on Saturday morning, devastating the local center and a local hydropower plant, the agency said.

A local TV channel said that at least 50,000 people had been affected by the landslides.

China's emergencies ministry said that over 1,000 people have been killed in the country since the start of the year. Weather specialists say current floods may be the strongest in China in the past 12 years.
