British authorities are considering the urgent cancelation of UK citizenship from two convicted Russian spies in the United States, a source at the UK Border Agency said.
She said that British Home Secretary Theresa May is looking into the issue on rescinding the citizenship from two defendants in the spy scandal.
The 28-year-old spy Ann Chapman (Kuschenko) is a British citizen and another woman - the 47-year-old Yelena Vavilova (Tracey Lee Ann) allegedly has a British passport.
Chapman received British citizenship after marrying British Alex Chapman in 2002, the couple divorced four years later. The woman came to the Unite States in early 2010 and was engaged in business. Chapman's lawyer earlier said that the woman is eager to return to Great Britain.
The U. K. Foreign Office recently announced it had started checking the authenticity of Vavilova's passport. British MI5 joined the examination soon, but the both entities have withdrawn comments on the results of the examination.
The source from the U.K. Border agency said that the Home Secretary is authorized to withdraw Brutish passport only from those who have dual citizenship.
The ten convicted Russian spies pleaded guilty on Thursday to charges of failing to register as agents of a foreign government and were deported from the United States in exchange for the release by Russia of four Russians convicted of spying for the West and pardoned by President Dmitry Medvedev.
On Friday, the ten were deported from the United States arrived to Moscow's Domodedovo International Airport on a Russian Emergency Ministry plane.
