The Kyrgyz authorities have lifted a state of emergency and curfew in the country's southern city of Jalalabad, an interim government spokesman said on Wednesday.

The Kyrgyz authorities have lifted a state of emergency and curfew in the country's southern city of Jalalabad, an interim government spokesman said on Wednesday.

"Due to stabilization of the situation the interim government decided not to extend state of emergency in Jalalabad," Farid Niyazov said.

A series of uprisings broke out across the ex-Soviet Central Asian republic in early April between opposition protesters and security forces, causing the deaths of more than 80 people and injuring around 1,500. An interim government was formed and deposed President Kurmanbek Bakiyev who was forced to flee the country and take a refuge in Belarus.

Since then, Kyrgyzstan has seen two waves of riots in and around Jalalabad, Bakiyev's former stronghold, between supporters of the deposed leader and backers of the interim government. A total of seven people have been killed and more than 90 injured.

The interim government, which blames Bakieyev for allowing the shooting of civilians in early April, says the recent riots were orchestrated from abroad.
