Ukrainian rescuers have left for Poland to help eliminate the consequences of heavy floods that claimed at least 12 lives, UNIAN news agency reported on Sunday, referring to Ukraine's Emergencies Ministry.

Heavy rains hit Poland late last week, with the country's southern regions affected the worst by the natural disaster. Local rescue teams are evacuating people from flooded areas.

"The first rescue team consisting of 27 people, and also nine pieces of machinery, including powerful pumps, have been sent to provide assistance to Polish colleagues in fighting the floods," the ministry said in a statement.

The water level in the Vistula River in the Polish capital has exceeded the alarm level by more than 1 meter but no evacuation of people from Warsaw has been launched.
