The opposition Conservative party leads in Thursday's parliamentary elections in the U.K., but fails to gain enough seats to get a parliamentary majority, according to the BBC/ITN/Sky exit poll.

The exit poll indicates that the Conservatives are likely to win 307 seats, 19 seats short of a majority in the 650-seat parliament.

The ruling Labour party will get 255 seats, according to the poll. Liberal Democrats will receive 59 seats, 29 seats will go to other parties.

It means that for the first time since 1974 the country will have a hung parliament, in which none of the parties has absolute majority.

The vote count continues and first results are expected at about midnight GMT.
