Ajmal Amir Kasab, the only gunman captured alive during the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attack in India, was sentenced to death on Thursday by a special court set up after the attacks, Joint commissioner of India's police Himanshu Roy said.

Kasab, 23, was sentenced to death three days after being declared guilty of mass murder, waging war against the Indian state, criminal conspiracy and committing terrorist activities. Kasab's lawyers asked the judge to give the defendant a life sentence.

"To be hanged by the neck till death," the judge said after each of the counts.

Kasab broke down while the sentence was being read out.

A group of ten gunmen including Kasab attacked Mumbai in 2008, killing 166 people. The other nine terrorists were shot dead by police.
