China has decided to allocate another $2.6 million for relief efforts in Haiti, hit by a devastating earthquake last week, Xinhua news agency said.

MOSCOW, January 22 (RIA Novosti) - China has decided to allocate another $2.6 million for relief efforts in Haiti, hit by a devastating earthquake last week, Xinhua news agency said.

A 7.0 magnitude earthquake devastated the impoverished Caribbean nation on January 12, with estimates of the number of dead ranging up to 200,000. An estimated three million people have been left without shelter and countries around the world are sending aid.

Liu Zhenmin, China's envoy to the EU, said his country would also contribute an additional 40-medical care people unit to help the devastated area.

"I am honored to announce that the Chinese government has decided to contribute an additional 2.6 million U.S. dollars in cash to Haiti, send a 40-member medical care and epidemic prevention team to Haiti and provide additional medicine and medical equipment to the country," Xinhua quoted Zhenmin as saying.

He earlier announced that China provided Haiti with $4.4 million in aid.

A new earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale hit Haiti Wednesday morning.

Fearing aftershocks, thousands of people have been sleeping in streets since the January 12 quake.
