Tajik President Emomali Rakhmon has been re-elected leader of the ruling People's Democratic Party, a RIA Novosti correspondent reported.
The People's Democratic Party is the largest among the eight officially registered political parties in Tajikistan, numbering 85,000 members.
Rakhmon, 57, was re-elected by 1,900 delegates at the party's 10th Congress in the Tajik capital, Dushanbe, on Saturday.
Addressing the delegates, Rakhmon said that the People's Democratic Party played a key role in ensuring peace, stability and national unity in the former Soviet republic, which became independent in 1991 after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
On June 22, 2003, he won a referendum allowing him to run for two more consecutive seven-year terms. He was elected for the third presidential term in November 2006.
The country has recently moved to step up ties with the West.
