Tehran's attempts to deny the Holocaust are inadmissible and do not contribute to the establishment of an effective international dialogue on Iran, a Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman said on Saturday.

MOSCOW, September 19 (RIA Novosti) - Tehran's attempts to deny the Holocaust are inadmissible and do not contribute to the establishment of an effective international dialogue on Iran, a Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman said on Saturday.

In a televised address to the nation on Friday, the Iranian leader, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, questioned the events of the Holocaust and called for investigations into it.

"Similar statements, no matter where they come from, violate the truth and are completely inadmissible," Andrei Nesterenko told reporters.

He said attempts to deny the Holocaust harm the memory of WWII victims and all those who fought against the Nazi.

"This does not contribute to the settlement of the task to create a favorable international atmosphere for establishing and maintaining effective dialogue on all issues concerning Iran either," the Russian diplomat said.

Israel holds a memorial day in April in remembrance of the six million Jews killed by Nazi Germany.

The Polish port city of Gdansk held international events on September 1 to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the start of World War II. At least 20 world leaders attended.
