A British railroad company's trains were canceled because no one volunteered to work as the company discontinued an agreement in line with which drivers were paid double on Sundays

LONDON, September 6 (RIA Novosti) - A British railroad company's trains were canceled Sunday because no one volunteered to work as the company discontinued an agreement in line with which drivers were paid double on Sundays.

London Midland's trains call at over 140 towns in Britain. The company employees' contracts stipulate only voluntary work on Sundays, but many of the employees used to agree to work when they received a double pay.

The company's statement on its website said: "There will be no London Midland trains running on Sunday 6 September (except between Birmingham and Liverpool) due to a staff shortage."

"For the majority of London Midland staff, working on Sundays is voluntary. This weekend a large number of onboard staff have failed to volunteer, which means we are unable run a Sunday train service on all but our Liverpool route," it said.

Passengers were recommended to avoid traveling on that day, but replacement bus services were provided for those unable to follow the recommendation. Other rail companies said they would accept London Midland tickets.
