CAIRO, August 17 (RIA Novosti) - Four Russian tourists went missing in Egypt's Red Sea resort of Marsa Alam on Monday while scuba diving, a local tourism official said.

The Russian embassy in Cairo is verifying the report, an embassy official told RIA Novosti.

Ehab Taher, the head of the scuba diving office in nearby Hurghada, said the Russians were part of a group of six divers. Only two came to the surface.

The Associated Press said citing Taher that the four were declared missing after a six-hour search involving several boats and a helicopter.

Also on Monday, a 65-year-old Russian tourist drowned in the Red Sea at the Egyptian resort of Nuweiba, Mena news agency said citing local medics. The Russian embassy has been informed of the incident.

Every year around 1.2 million tourists travel to Egypt. The Egyptian government had recently tightened safety rules for Red Sea scuba diving centers due to the large numbers of visitors.
