MAKHACHKALA, August 15 (RIA Novosti) - Two officers injured in separate attacks on police posts in Dagestan's capital on Saturday have died, a security official in the volatile southern Russian republic said.
One officer was wounded when gunmen opened fire at the police post near Makhachkala's central square, home to the Interior Ministry and administrative buildings, and later died in hospital.
Another policeman died of his injuries after a shootout in the city's northern suburbs.
"One police officer died and another was wounded and is undergoing an operation in hospital," a police spokesman said.
He said the attack resembled a sniper attack which killed two officers and injured another in Makhachkala early on Friday.
Dagestan, which neighbors Chechnya, has seen an upsurge in militant violence in recent months, with attacks on police, other officials and federal forces being a regular occurrence. In June, Dagestan's interior minister was assassinated at a wedding reception.
Eleven people, four police and seven female civilians, were killed in an attack on a police post in the Caspian town of Buinaksk and a nearby health center earlier this week.
