Libya plans to build a new school in the Gaza Strip, to be named after Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi, Palestinian radio reported on Tuesday.

GAZA, July 14 (RIA Novosti) - Libya plans to build a new school in the Gaza Strip, to be named after Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi, Palestinian radio reported on Tuesday.

The school will be built in the central part of the Palestinian enclave, and will have 22 fully equipped classrooms.

An agreement on the construction was signed by Qaddafi's daughter Ayesha, who heads the Wa Attassimou charity, and UN representatives in Tripoli.

"This initiative shows Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi's steady and permanent position: Libya continues to support Palestinian people," Palestinian Ambassador to Libya Basim Agha told reporters at the signing ceremony.

According to a Red Cross report released in late June, the humanitarian situation in Gaza remains desperate, with entire neighborhoods lying in rubble since Israel's 22-day offensive at the start of the year.

Around 200 schools were destroyed in the attack, along with tens of thousands of homes.

Israel maintains a blockade on the crowded enclave, which it says is needed to prevent weapons smuggling.
