MOSCOW, May 8 (RIA Novosti) - Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has registered as a candidate for the country's June presidential elections, national media reported on Friday.

Ahmadinejad, elected president in 2005, is seeking a second four-year term in office.

In accordance with Iranian law, he is unable to serve for more than two consecutive terms.

The five-day registration period opened on 5 May.

Reformist candidates Mehdi Karroubi and Mir Hossein Mousavi are seen as Ahmadinejad's main challengers.

Earlier in the day, a former head of Iran's Revolutionary Guards, Mohsen Rezai, registered as a presidential hopeful, but he is not viewed as a serious rival for Ahmadinejad.
