MOSCOW, April 12 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's Foreign Ministry on Sunday advised Russian citizens against visiting the capital of Thailand where a state of emergency was declared over protests staged by the opposition.

"The Russian Foreign Ministry recommends Russian citizens to carefully weigh the expediency of trips to Thailand during the period of the state of emergency," the ministry said in a statement, adding that there were clashes in Bangkok between police and protesters.

Protests in Thailand started in March this year after the government allocated 9 million low-paid Thai workers assistance worth $55 each. Protestors called the assistance "bribery" and said the cabinet had come to power illegally.

A summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Pattaya, Thailand, was canceled on Saturday over protests staged by the opposition.
