ATHENS, April 1 (RIA Novosti) - The Greek government introduced a bill to the country's parliament on Wednesday that would levy new taxes on high-earners amid the global financial crisis.

Under the bill, people earning between 150,000 and 300,000 euros ($200,000-$400,000) a year will pay extra 5,000 euros ($6,630) to the government. Levels of the new tax will rise until the wealthiest Greeks, earning more than 900,000 euros a year, will pay 25,000 euros.

Greek Finance Minister Yannis Papathanassiou said however that "the policy of decreasing tax coefficients will not change."

Greece forecasts economic growth of 1.1% in 2009, while the European Commission expects the country's GDP for the year to remain at 2008's level.
