MOSCOW, March 19 (RIA Novosti) - Somalia has worked out a set of measures to make the fight against piracy in the region more effective, the Somali ambassador to Russia said on Thursday.

"The Somali naval administration proposes creating a security corridor by a method of forming caravans. The government is also preparing to adopt a number of laws aimed to increase the wealth of people in order to eradicate economic preconditions for piracy," Mohamed Handule said.

The diplomat said it is necessary to tackle piracy both on sea and on land, adding that there are enough international warships in the region, but their work must be coordinated more effectively.

Around 20 warships from the navies of at least a dozen countries, including Russia, are involved in anti-piracy operations off Somalia, which has been ravaged by years of civil war.

According to the United Nations, Somali pirates carried out at least 120 attacks on ships in 2008, resulting in combined ransom payouts of around $150 million.
