CAIRO, February 18 (RIA Novosti) - Talks on reestablishing political unity among all the Palestinian factions scheduled for February 22 in Cairo have been postponed, the Egyptian MENA news agency reported on Wednesday.

The agency did not report when the meeting might take place, and quoted an Egyptian official as saying that "additional consultations" were needed.

According to Qatar's Al-Jazeera television, the postponement was because of a breach in the ceasefire agreement between the Palestinian government in the Gaza Strip and Israel that was supposed to have come into force at the beginning of the week.

On Tuesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said a Palestinian unity government was "crucial for ending the blockade of the Gaza Strip, allowing it to function normally ... as well as for renewing the peace process."

Over the past several weeks there have been three meetings between the main Palestinian Fatah and Hamas movements moderated by Egypt. The Palestinians have said that the meetings have "broken some ice" between the opposing factions.

The Hamas and Fatah movements, the largest Palestinian political organizations, split in June 2007 when Hamas took control of the Gaza Strip and pushed the Fatah movement out of the enclave of 1.5 million. Hamas has since remained in power in Gaza, independent of the officially recognized government of Fatah in the West Bank, which is headed by Mahmoud Abbas.
