MOSCOW, February 1 (RIA Novosti) - Abkhazian police rejected on Sunday Georgian media reports that two Russian soldiers were allegedly killed in an incident in Abkhazia.

The Georgian media claimed that two Russian soldiers died and three others were injured after falling from an armored personnel carrier into a water ditch.

"There have been no incidents involving the deaths of servicemen. I made a special inquiry for this purpose. There were no incidents either yesterday or today involving Russian servicemen in the Gali district," Laurens Kogoniya, head of the Gali interior department, said over the phone.

This is a new provocation on the part of Georgian media, Kogoniya said.

Abkhazia and South Ossetia were recognized as independent states by Russia last August following Georgia's assault on South Ossetia to regain control of the breakaway republic and Moscow's five-day military operation to force Tbilisi to peace.

Nicaragua soon followed Russia's lead in recognizing the republics, but no other country has done so.

Abkhazia and South Ossetia split from Georgia in the early 1990s, and most residents of both republics have had Russian citizenship for a number of years.

A spokesman for the Abkhazian president said on Thursday that Russia and Abkhazia would soon sign an agreement on the deployment of Russian air and naval bases in the breakaway Georgian republic.
