ASTANA, December 4 (RIA Novosti) - The Kazakh foreign minister called on the OSCE to improve its effectiveness and avoid a policy of "double standards" at a meeting of the Ministerial Council in Helsinki on Thursday.

"It is important to get rid of accusations in regard to the organization of its selectivity and double standards. It is obvious that the measures taken to raise its effectiveness are insufficient," Marat Tazhin told 50 foreign ministers attending the meeting of the Organization of Security and Cooperation in Europe.

Kazakhstan is due to take over the rotating OSCE presidency in 2010.

Tazhin said he was in favor of the proposal made by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev to draft a new European security treaty. "The OSCE is a good platform for solving the issues of strengthening the whole architecture of the Euro-Atlantic security."

The minister also called on the OSCE to cement partnership relations with other regional organizations, including the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

Medvedev earlier said that any new security arrangements should be based on "pure" national interests, not skewed by ideological motives, adding that "organizations operating in the Euro-Atlantic region" should also be allowed to join.
