MOSCOW, September 15 (RIA Novosti) - Two men died and over 10 were injured during a mass brawl between Uzbek workers and Russians in the Moscow Region, a local police spokesman said on Monday.

He said the clash started at about midnight on Saturday in a local shop when three Uzbek nationals, who worked at a nearby building site, were involved in a quarrel with a shop assistant.

He said, local men decided to step in and defend the shop assistant, which resulted in the Uzbek nationals phoning for backup.

"As a result of the clash between two groups of men, more than 10 people were injured, two of them - locals aged 28 and 26 - died at the scene, while several others were hospitalized, including Uzbek nationals," he said.

Police, who detained around 20 people armed with knives and steel bars, said they have taken steps to try and prevent an escalation in ethnic tensions following the deaths.
