MOSCOW, March 5 (RIA Novosti) - A man living in Zejtun, in south Malta, is on trial charged with cultivating 110 cannabis plants at his house, local media said on Wednesday.

Police detained Anthony Seychel, 47, after discovering cannabis plants growing on the roof and in several rooms at the man's house, the Times of Malta reported.

Officers also found equipment for sprouting seeds, drying leaves and buds as well as fertilizers. Meanwhile, Seychel is insisting that he was growing the cannabis for "personal use," as he suffers with back pain.

Currently, he smokes at least six cannabis-filled cigarettes a day for pain relief.

The man also told the court that the first cannabis plant had grown unexpectedly after a seed fell to the ground while he was feeding his canary.

However, the judge dismissed the claim as unsound.
