ISLAMABAD, January 14 (RIA Novosti) - At least 12 people were killed and over 60 injured in what police described as a terrorist attack in the southern Pakistani city of Karachi on Monday, local television has said.

Authorities have officially confirmed 10 deaths and about 40 injured, and media reports say that there are children among the dead and wounded.

Television reports said an explosive device had been planted in a motorbike parked at a busy crossroads in the eastern part of the city. No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.

Authorities have yet to comment, but initial reports indicate the blast could be connected to President Pervez Musharraf's visit to Karachi on Monday.

Turmoil in Pakistan has worsened since the murder of former premier and popular opposition leader Benazir Bhutto on December 27 last year in a suicide attack during a rally.
